Neither of these is specific to Thanksgiving, nevertheless they relate to some themes from the holiday. Frankly, I can enjoy these free movies for Thanksgiving and any day of the year.

Big oil company propaganda using a heart! Just the free movie we require for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one of the most lyrical American films ever made. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry through the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of an Cajun boy with his fantastic family, living about the bayous you might say of life that individuals can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land to the oil company, which comes in, drills, and instead gives off everything much like it was, clean and unspoiled with the exception that the family carries a little more money. (Yes, it absolutely was funded with the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends nearly all of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating over the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, along with his pet raccoon. He never wears your life preserver or shoes... doesn't also have a cell phone to get in touch with case he gets struggling. There is not much story, merely a celebration (such stunning black and white photography that you may well wonder what are the big deal is around color) of a way of life which is no longer with us.
All in the actors were amateurs, and then for most, this was their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. Boudreaux, who totally boy, was living in a FEMA trailer regarding his wife of fifty-five years, after Hurricane Rita destroyed their property. (source). A monochrome silent film that ends using a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, exactly what every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have three good reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc with this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was available. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died believing that the last copy was destroyed. In a amount of weirdness that sounds similar to a movie compared to truth, a practically complete print was discovered in 1981 in a very janitor's closet of your Norwegian mental institution.
